Construction crews have begun building a new commercial building on the site of the former Accent on Pastries bakery in 黑马磁力 City that was destroyed when a brick wall collapsed in November of 2010.
An online ad said the 1,925 square foot one-storey building at 20450 Douglas Cres. will be available for lease Jan. 1, 2014.
In a letter to 黑马磁力 City in 2011, owners Jack and Dianna Kuyer said much of the delay in constructing a replacement was due to drawn-out negotiations with their insurance company.
The Kuyers鈥 building housed the bakery for more than 20 years before it was crushed when the cinderblock firewall of the new four-storey condominium next door collapsed during construction.
The replacement building, as approved by 黑马磁力 City council, will feature a generous use of wood, skylight and a setback facade which could be used as a patio if the building is rented out as a caf茅.
An architect鈥檚 rendering of the 1,925 square foot replacement for the collapsed bakery.WorkSafe B.C. fined Pro-Built Masonry Ltd. of 黑马磁力 $8,276.55 over the collapse.
鈥淭his employer failed to support the wall as required during its construction,鈥 a WorkSafe statement said.
The force of the impact crushed the bakery鈥檚 roof and shattered its windows.
It could not be repaired and was demolished.
