Saman Dara may be new to Aldergrove, but is already jumping in with both feet meeting tons of people at this past weekend's fair.
Dara has officially joined the Aldergrove Star newsroom as editor, and publisher Shaulene Walsh encourages the community to reach out and introduce themselves.
"A local journalist brings deep-rooted curiosity, community trust, and a commitment to shining light on the stories that shape everyday lives 鈥 I am looking forward to Saman using her talents and shining that light for the Aldergrove community and Aldergrove Star," Walsh said.
Dara, who grew up in North Vancouver, completed her bachelor of arts in communication at Simon Fraser University in 2022.
鈥淭hrough my studies, I was always curious about journalism as a career,鈥 said Dara.
In the summer of 2022, she decided to pursue a master of journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University鈥檚 (TMU) school of journalism.
During her time at TMU, Dara produced live journalism shows, worked as both a research assistant and teaching assistant, and contributed to student publications.
鈥淚鈥檓 so excited to apply what I learned in J-school and put it to work here,鈥 she said.
鈥淭he team has been very welcoming. I can tell there鈥檚 a wealth of knowledge in this newsroom.鈥
Dara is passionate about inclusive storytelling and believes in the power of local journalism to enrich the community.
She is looking forward to getting out into the field in the coming weeks to connect with Aldergrove residents, businesses, and community groups.
鈥淚鈥檓 excited to serve this community and learn more about what鈥檚 important to the people who live here," she said.
