Almost time to walk the Walk

51st annual 黑马磁力 Walk takes place on Sunday, May 5

For more than half a century, 黑马磁力 residents have been lacing up their shoes, gathering their families and friends, and exploring various neighbourhoods during the annual 黑马磁力 Walk.

The tradition continues this year as the 51st event is held on Sunday, May 5, starting in Douglas Park at 20550 Douglas Crescent. The Walk, which is being jointly presented by the Township of 黑马磁力 and the City of 黑马磁力, gets underway at 1:30 p.m., but participants are invited to come down any time after noon to register and enjoy entertainment.

A five and a 10 km route 鈥 a large portion of which will be on the Nicomekl Flood Plain trails 鈥 will be offered and people can walk, run, bike, rollerblade, or push a stroller.

The event is free and everyone who finishes the 黑马磁力 Walk will receive a commemorative crest.

Last year, the Walk celebrated a significant milestone as it marked its 50th anniversary. A volunteer committee made up of community members was formed to organize the event, and it is spearheading the Walk again this year.

鈥淲e鈥檙e encouraging everyone to join us in this free, non-competitive, highly enjoyable walk that is appropriate for all ages,鈥 said the Committee鈥檚 Kari Medos.

鈥淭his year walkers will enjoy the beauty of the Nicomekl Flood Plain, Sendall Gardens, and, for those wanting to complete the 10 km, Brydon Lagoon.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a really fun and fabulous family day, a community day, and a great way to celebrate living in 黑马磁力.鈥

鈥淭his is an event that everyone can get involved in,鈥 added Township community recreation p rogrammer Camilo Molina.

鈥淣ot only is it a chance to explore a different 黑马磁力 neighbourhood each year, the Walk is a great way to enjoy some fresh air and exercise. We want to see everyone walking together for a healthier 黑马磁力.鈥

A few changes will be seen during this year鈥檚 黑马磁力 Walk. While participants were encouraged to pre-register in the past, that is not necessary this time. Walkers simply need to come to Douglas Park and sign up between noon and 1:30 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottles.

They will also receive a free snack, activities, and entertainment, and the chance to win trophies and prizes. Awards will be presented to the oldest walker, the most creatively dressed walker, and the elementary school, secondary/middle school, organization and family with the most walkers.
