黑马磁力 City hosts first Social Streets event on Wednesday at Linwood Park

黑马磁力 City is hosting a series of neighbourhood street parties, kicking it off with an afternoon of food, fun, and music at Linwood Park this week.

It's the first-ever Social Streets event, explained Mayor Nathan Pachal.

This free, family-friendly neighbourhood event is all about connecting with neighbours, enjoying music and food, and exploring how we can make our streets safer and more vibrant, said Pachal.

The first event is happening Wednesday, July 23, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the park, located at 201A Street and Michaud Crescent.

鈥淪trong communities are formed when neighbours get to know each other," the mayor said.

"Our Social Street program helps create casual opportunities to connect," he added, noting that the event will feature sidewalk chalk art and games, a community picnic where he encourage people to bring blankets and food to enjoy together. The afternoon will also spotlight some safety resources, including teaching people how to keep safe in an emergency, plus there will be healthy food demos.

Inspired by successful programs like Bogota鈥檚 Ciclov铆a and San Francisco鈥檚 Sunday Streets, Social Streets aims to transform public spaces into safe and vibrant community hubs, said Pachal.

While this first event takes place in a park, future events may move to car-free streets.

The event will also kick off community workshops where residents can help plan future Social Streets events in their neighbourhoods.
"I look forward to this first event and the feedback from the community for future events,鈥 he said.

Future events are on the books for other areas of the City, the next being at Hunter Park on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday, Sept. 3 the neighbours in the Rotary Park area are invited out between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
