Charlotte Bront毛鈥檚 Gothic novel comes to musical life in all its haunting, mysterious and romantic beauty in Trinity Western University School of the Arts, Media + Culture鈥檚 final production of the season 鈥

Running March 14 to April 1 at TWU鈥檚 Robert N. Thompson building, the musical follows the story of Jane, a young governess, who fights for dignity and a better outcome for herself only to fall inexplicably in love with her troubled employer. When the secret he harbours threatens to jeopardize their chance at happiness, will she let passion or her conscience rule her heart?

Replete with deep and honest characterizations, this is not a typical musical. This historical drama features strong, unconventional heroines, brooding heroes, romance, intrigue and a touch of comedy.

鈥淭he story is about people who are trapped in some way: by societal expectations, by hatred, by money or class,鈥 explained TWU theatre major, Kate Nundal, who plays Jane鈥檚 guardian, Mrs. Reed. 鈥淲e follow Jane as she struggles to overcome these 鈥榗ages鈥 to find herself and her freedom.鈥

鈥淭here are strong themes of forgiveness and liberty in the script,鈥 said director Kate Muchmore Woo, who is also assistant professor of theatre at TWU.

鈥淭he chance to direct a musical that is this dark and haunting 鈥 but also beautiful and full of truth 鈥 is not something that happens often.鈥

Joining Muchmore Woo in the production team are design team members Carolyn Rapanos (set), Megan Gilron (costumes), and Chengyan Boon (lights and projections). Allan Thorpe is musical director.

The cast of 23 features Julianna Towle as Jane Eyre and Paul Kobilke as Rochester.

Tickets range from $16 to $25 and are available online at or by calling 604-513-2188.
