UPDATE: Vessel near former BC Ferry in Mission catches fire

Mission Fire Rescue Service crews knock down fire near Lougheed Highway and Nelson Street; Coast Guard notified

A fire on a smaller vessel near the former Queen of Sidney ferry in Mission was knocked down on Sunday (July 13).

Crews from all three Mission Fire Rescue Service stations responded to the blaze near Lougheed Highway and Nelson Street before 7 p.m. on Sunday (July 13).

"The vessel will continue "off-gassing" for the next 24 hours so visible smoke may continue," MFRS said in a Facebook post.

The department said the Canadian Coast Guard has been notified and fire investigator will be on site on Monday (July 14).

According to the Alertable app, the former Queen of Sidney itself was not on fire.

The ex-BC ferry garnered a large response on May 3 after it caught fire while moored on the Fraser River.

MFRS advises residents to continue to avoid the area.
