Crews are digging up 40 Avenue between 212 and 216 Streets to install new culverts.
Twin concrete boxes, each measuring 4.25m x 4.25m and approximately 36m in length, are expected to be installed by early September, according to an online update from Mayor Eric Woodward.
The road was closed to all but local traffic Oct. 19, 2024, following an atmospheric river event that resulted in the failure of two metal corrugated pipes installed in 1978.
"The failure has resulted in the deformation of both pipes, sinkholes, and settlement of the sidewalk, road, and retaining wall on the southern end directly over the culvert inlet," Woodward explained.
"With a year-round stream, 70 meters of new culvert needed, and a watermain to Brookswood, the project is not a simple one."
The Township of 黑马磁力 has an emergency authorization from Fisheries and Oceans Canada to carry out the work, with notice to the province of BC, but in-stream work is only allowed between June 1 and Sept. 30, Woodward explained.
Preparatory work on the rain-damaged stretch of 40 Ave. saw Township crews install a temporary watermain bypass on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
At the time an unsigned Township statement described it as a "crucial step in the upcoming culvert replacement works."
"This bypass will also ensure a continuous water supply to the Brookswood/Murrayville area in the event of further deterioration of the culvert, which could impact the existing water main," the release said.
In February, the Township approved up to $14 million in borrowing to upgrade or repair 40 Ave. and several other major culverts that are most in danger of failing.
According to Township staff, there are 117 culverts out of more than 8,000 in the Township listed as either "critical" or "monitor/replace," the two most serious statuses for culverts that have been inspected by the Township.
