Stolen sunshade puts damper on Lower Mainland woman鈥檚 pet-relief effort

Broken umbrella taken from White Rock lawn 鈥榳ithin 10 minutes鈥

Leslie Davison is shaking her head at the latest target of thieves in her neighbourhood 鈥 a broken umbrella.

But it wasn鈥檛 just any broken umbrella; it was one she鈥檇 put out to shade a water dish she leaves at the edge of her White Rock lawn for neighbourhood dogs to quench their thirst.

鈥淚 thought it was genius to do that,鈥 Davison said of the effort to keep the water out of the sun, which has brought temperatures of 30-plus degrees in recent days.

鈥淚n this heat, it鈥檚 so important for dogs to keep cool.

鈥淏ut it was gone so quick.鈥

Davison, who has two dogs of her own, said she planted the multi-coloured parasol 鈥 it used to be attached to a beach chair 鈥 firmly into the ground behind the water dish around 9 a.m. Monday.

It disappeared within 10 minutes.

鈥淚 just thought, how sad, when it鈥檚 clearly for the dogs,鈥 she said.

Removed from the ground, the brolly wouldn鈥檛 even stay open on its own, she noted, describing it as a 鈥渢iny, crappy little umbrella.鈥

鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 anything of worth.鈥

Davison said Wednesday she will replace the umbrella, 鈥淚 just got a sad giggle from鈥 the theft.

The incident was the second piece of bad luck for Davison in recent weeks.

Last month, she lost her wallet while out for an ice cream at East Beach, forcing her to re-schedule a flight she鈥檇 planned to Ottawa for her 94-year-old mother鈥檚 birthday.
