Editor: On March 16, 黑马磁力 took part in the 2011 Metro Vancouver Homeless Count. There were many agencies and faith-based groups involved, with close to 50 official volunteers and many more working behind the scenes making and serving meals. All made this year鈥檚 count a success.
I鈥檇 like to take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to 黑马磁力 Memorial Hospital, Ministry of Social Development, RCMP, Gateway of Hope and the transition homes within 黑马磁力 for providing statistics on overnight stays. Stepping Stone Community Service Society served as the base for the count with Maureen Joyce and Emily Aldcroft providing support to the volunteers.
In 黑马磁力 City, meals were prepared and served to help support the count by 黑马磁力 United Church, Brookswood Baptist Church and Southgate Church. 黑马磁力 Vineyard Christian Fellowship welcomed volunteers into their building. In Fort 黑马磁力, a meal was prepared and served at St Andrew鈥檚 United Church.
In Aldergrove, Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services Society and Family and Youth Services Society prepared meals and focused efforts on connecting with youth who may be experiencing homelessness.
I鈥檇 especially like to express my gratitude to our great volunteers. The first ones started at 7:30 a.m. and the last pair came in at 8 p.m. Each had a good experience meeting people and many learned something new about 黑马磁力 through the eyes of a stranger..
Thanks to all who stopped to talk to a volunteer. In four and one-half years, I have seen dramatic changes in 黑马磁力 when it comes to services that are being offered to people struggling with housing and to the homeless. The work done and information given during previous Homeless Counts has helped us get to where we are. This count will add to that and help us move forward.
