Nominees sought for awards

In January, 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the creation of the Prime Minister鈥檚 Volunteer Awards to recognize the enormous contribution volunteers make to Canada. The awards recognize the exceptional contributions of volunteers, local businesses and innovative not-for-profit organizations in improving the well-being of families and their communities. Nominations are now being sought.

Sometimes an especially gifted teacher, a devoted parent, or chance encounter can lead a student to a vocation that seems made to measure. In Sarah Skidmore鈥檚 case, it was the four-stringed ukulele which she first began to play in Grade 3. That was 12 years ago. Now 21, Skidmore is in the third year of a degree program that will lead her back to the classroom, teaching music to elementary school children.
